Women Breaking Boundaries

On 15 May 2026, Justice Elizabeth Chiedza Gwaunza became the first female Chief Justice of Zimbabwe, a defining moment for women in leadership across Africa and the world.

Her appointment is more than a personal achievement. It is a reminder that women continue to break barriers in spaces that were once closed to them. From boardrooms to courtrooms, women are reshaping leadership with excellence, resilience, and vision.

Justice Gwaunza’s journey reflects decades of dedication and courage. Born in 1953, she was among the first black female law graduates from the University of Zimbabwe and was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1987. She went on to become a High Court judge in 1998, joined the Supreme Court in 2002, and later served as Deputy Chief Justice from 2018.

Beyond her judicial work, she also played a key role in advancing women in the legal profession as a founder of the Zimbabwe Association of Women Judges and a former national coordinator for the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project.

Today, Female Founders Initiative Global celebrates Justice Elizabeth Chiedza Gwaunza for showing young girls, founders, professionals, and women leaders everywhere that leadership has no gender limit.
